Free as in speech: Why your organization doesn't have to pay for software
Wednesday May 30, 8:00-noon
Taught by Stan Gunn

This workshop will present a review of free and open source software that archives and archivists can use both internally and to communicate with their users. Several tools will be demonstrated that are free to download and use. As a real-world example, there will be a discussion of how the www.ssacares.org website was brought online in less than 72 hours in response to Hurricane Katrina.

Bio: Stan Gunn has a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Texas at Austin. After fifteen years with the Texas Youth Commission, most recently as the Chief Information Officer, Stan moved to the corporate world. He now works for IBM as a client services advocate. In addition, Stan is a part-time faculty member at the UT School of Information where he teaches classes on collaborative technologies and open source programming for the web.

Preserving Your Community Heritage with
Oral History Projects
Wednesday May 30, 1:00-5:00
Taught by Mary Jane Warde and Rodger Harris

This workshop will help the participant establish a product goal for your institution that could produce a book, a webpage, or an audio or video interactive product. This will include advice and direction on writing a mission statement for the project, how to clarify your objective(s), the technical concerns of doing oral histories, and how to turn oral histories collections into community treasures.
