Welcome
one and all to San Antonio, site of the 2004 Society of
Southwest Archivists annual meeting.
Please join us, May 27-29, 2004, at the historic La
Mansion. The La Mansion is centrally located on the RiverWalk.
It is steps away from the quiet, scenic end of the river; yet, a
leisurely stroll in the other direction and one finds
restaurants, coffee houses, and the short cut to the Alamo.
Thursday’s
events includes two workshops - Archives
and Intellectual Properties in the Digital Age: An Examination
of the Legal and Ethical issues and
Preservation, Maintenance, and Management of Magnetic Media
Collections. The
opening reception, co-sponsored by the Witte and UTSA Library,
will be Thursday evening at the Witte Museum.
Friday
will begin with a breakfast for newcomers.
Please meet in the lobby at 7:45 to go to area
restaurants. Breakfast
is self-paid. The
Plenary session will begin at 9:00.
There will be a choice of nine sessions throughout the
day and our lunch speaker will be Dora Guerra.
Ms. Guerra, a native
San Antonian and former head of the UTSA Special Collections
will be presenting “The Story of the San Antonio River
Walk.” Dinner Friday night will be in small groups to local
RiverWalk restaurants and led by members of the Local
Arrangements committee. Restaurant
sign-up sheets will be available at the SSA Registration desk on
Thursday and Friday. The
Ghost
Tour is one of the choices for dinner.
Registration is limited to the first fifty people.
Saturday
morning will begin with the SSA business meeting and breakfast.
Cindy Smolovik will be giving us an update on the
A*CENSUS project. This
will be followed by a return of the wildly popular Slotto MC’d
by our own wildly popular Kim
Allen Scott. Please bring your slotto donations or mail them
to Gerrianne Schaad at 801 South Bowie, San Antonio, TX 78205.
There will be a Missions
tour Saturday afternoon for those of you interested.
Late
registration begins on May 1, 2004.
Registrations received after May 7 will be treated like
on-site registration. On-site
registrants will not have seats in the Friday lunch or Saturday
breakfast. I hope
all of you will come in early and stay the weekend.
There is plenty to see and do in San Antonio and the
weather should be lovely.
