MayDay 2007
With the difficulty many archivists in our region had in reaching their collections in the immediate aftermath of the 2005 hurricanes still fresh, the Society of Southwest Archivists is encouraging its members to celebrate 2007 May Day (May 1) by taking steps to build relationships with the gatekeepers of access in such events.
- Learn who you would need to contact at your university, local or state government, or other appropriate level of administration in your reporting structure to gain access to your repository in the event of an emergency or disaster
- Contact that person by phone or email.
- Provide him or her with information about your repository.
- Invite him or her to tour your facility.
- Discuss what access you would have in a disaster and explain your concerns about the stability of collections in such circumstances.
- Add this person to your mailing list so they see the types of activities you conduct and to keep you on their radar.
See SAA's MayDay page for additional actitivies you can do to celebrate May Day.

During
the 78th Texas Legislative Session senators and
representatives filed over 500 bills that appeared to have
significance to archivists, records managers, and records keepers.
One hundred sixty-four passed with Governor Perry vetoing seven,
one, SB 1154, because it would have had an adverse effect upon a
planned public library and another, SB 1526, because it would have
restricted access to public information about automobile vendors.
Others were vetoed because they were unnecessary or
conflicted with provisions of other laws. Click for
more.
